City bus from Jaipur

Buses run from Ajmeri Gate and MI Road, and the ride to Amber Palace takes about 40 minutes. That is a rough guide, not a timetable. Traffic and stops change the time.

One route described for this journey is AC1, which runs from Sanganer to Kukas. It passes Ajmeri Gate, Sanganeri Gate, Badi Chaupad, Ramgarh Mod, Jal Mahal and Amer Fort. Because it passes the lake, it works as a way to see Jal Mahal from the road on the way up.

Route lists date quickly. Check the current stops, the frequency and the last bus back at the stop before you rely on a bus, especially if you plan to stay for the evening show.

Taxi or auto-rickshaw

Taxis and auto-rickshaws run from Jaipur to Amber. Fares are not fixed in this guide, so settle the price and the waiting or return arrangement before you get in. If you want to see Jal Mahal on the way, say so at the start.

Plan how you get back before you go up, and agree a pick-up time if you can. This matters most after the light and sound show.

From the foot of the hill to the palace

The way up to the fort is steep. Walking is possible, and you should expect a climb, not a stroll. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. No walking time is given here because it depends on your pace and the heat.

Jeeps are another way up. One provider charges INR 200 per vehicle with room for 4 to 5 people. That is not an official tariff, and the return ride is a separate question. Ask before you board. Jeep access can be disrupted, so do not count on it without checking on site.

Elephant rides are a separate matter, with their own rules and a debate about animal welfare. Read the elephant ride page before you decide, as the rides can be paused.
