What the Sheesh Mahal is

Sheesh Mahal means mirror palace. At Amber Fort it is the hall known for mirror cladding on its walls and ceilings. Small pieces of mirror are set into the surfaces in patterns, and the ceiling is inlaid in the same way.

Use the name with care. Jaipur has other places that are described as mirror palaces or mirror attractions, among them private mirror attractions in the city and at Nahargarh. The Sheesh Mahal on this page is the one inside the Amber palace complex.

What to look for

Details that are worth a slow look.

The mirrored ceiling

Look up as well as around you. The ceiling is inlaid with mirror, and the pattern changes as you move. Give your eyes a minute to adjust if the room is dim.

The walls

The wall surfaces carry the same mirror work. Stand back from the edge of the room, if you view it from the edge, to take in the whole pattern rather than single pieces.

A story to treat as a story

A popular tale says a single candle can light the whole hall. It is a retelling, not a measured fact, so enjoy it as one.

Other parts of the palace near it

Gates, halls and gardens you will pass on the same visit.

The Ganesh Pol is a richly decorated gate. It leads on to the next courtyard, which has a garden and buildings facing each other. Above the gate sits the Suhag Mandir with its lattice windows. The gate has painted detail that repays a close look.

The Diwan-i-Aam is the hall of public audience. The ruler heard the requests of his subjects there. Another area, the Sukh Niwas, is described as having a historic water-based cooling system. That describes how it worked in the past. It does not mean it runs today.

Visitors reach the palace by the Suraj Pol, or by the Chand Pol if they arrive by car. Both lead to the Jaleb Chowk. Festival days can change the way in, so read the Amber Fort timings first.

Before you go in

Points to settle on the day.

Can you enter the room?

Check on arrival whether visitors may step into the innermost mirror room or only look in from the edge. Access to such rooms can change, and it is not something to assume from photos.

Photography

Ask about flash and tripod rules before you take pictures. Rules for a single room can differ from the rest of the complex, and you should not count on unrestricted photography.

Extra charge and timed slots

Ask at the ticket counter whether the Sheesh Mahal has a separate charge or fixed visiting slots. The adult entry rates are on the Amber Fort tickets page.

More palaces in Jaipur

If you enjoy palace interiors, the royal residence in the old city is a good second visit. See the guide to the City Palace in Jaipur.
